Sometimes it happens sooner, sometimes later, but it seems inevitable: the division between “boys” and “girls.” Whether it’s toys and clothes that aren’t allowed for everyone, or behavioral patterns that are supposed to change. But why are we divided into two binary groups? Why do we have to adapt our actions and the things that bring us joy to one of these poles? Why does it matter whether you’re a boy or a girl? There is also the biological in-between, which feels different still, and nature views it all with far less rigidity than our society does. After all, who decides who I should be, who I fall in love with, and how I feel?
The program presents six films that find their own forms and narrative styles to cinematically explore the complexity of our biological and social genders and society’s treatment of difference.
