The film purports to “reconstruct an event that took place about 100 years ago and presumably lasted several years.” It shows sepia-toned photographs of people walking in orderly rows along a dirt road, horse-drawn carts, destroyed bridges. A calm male voiceover describes the images and interprets them as documents of a mass migration. But if you look closely, you quickly realize that something is not right.
*** NOTE ON DISTRIBUTION ***
Franz Winzentsen works with historical photographs from World War I. The discrepancy between the increasingly gruesome images and his voice-over narration creates irritation. This alienation effect is intentional, but may lead to unwelcome overwhelm.
Human Migration - A Misunderstanding is not particularly suitable as a supporting film in regular cinema screenings. We happily recommend this demanding short film for curated programs framed by an introduction or subsequent discussion.
